Karma Co-op has operated as a non-profit, member owned and operated food store food in this lane since 1972, serving the Seaton Village residents and far beyond. Its street address is 739 Palmerston Ave. Suzanne Methot has created a well-researched history of the building's uses since at least 1910, and possibly as early as 1903. It has primarily been a bakery in its past lives, with the Magee families, living at Palmerston Ave., figuring prominently in the bread baking business. Please refer to: http://www.karmacoop.org/about-karma/building_history/ While the City of Toronto might consider this a "Business Naming", being a not for profit Co-op should allow an exception.
This is apparently one of the last remaining examples of Laneway Businesses that were common in the past. Auto repair shops to gardeners to welders and stables once populated the laneways. There is a trend to re-populate lanes with residences and small businesses in Britain and Europe as cities intensify. Seaton Village already has a few examples of Laneway residences and businesses operating from garages. This increased use is expected to improve the safe use of our lanes. The name is unique to Toronto.
